Thank you for your letter dated the 5th of August, regarding your concerns about the events that
took place in Leicester last year. As one of the Officials with responsibility for the review, l have been
asked to reply.

The government takes disorder such as we saw in Leicester last year very seriously. We are
absolutely committed to protecting all communities and will not tolerate attempts to foster division
or violence among them. This is why the government has commissioned an Independent Review,
which will strengthen cohesion in Leicester and address issues such as the concerns you have raised
in your letter.
The Review will examine the wider factors which may have contributed to or exacerbated the recent
tensions. It will seek to understand the origins of unrest, help break down the harmful narratives
that you have mentioned and reduce the number of these incidents.
As the review, its panel members and its chair are independent, the review will be able to establish
the facts of what happened objectively.
The panel members will engage with as wide a range of members of the community as possible, as
well as seeking the views of community representatives. I would encourage you to participate in the
review where possible and ensure that your views are taken into account and am sure you agree
that a cohesive city with positive relations between all communities is in everyone’s best interests.
The independent panel remain committed to producing a fair account of what took place in
Leicester and look forward to cooperating with communities and individual stakeholders in respect
of this very important issue.
