What is Vayu or Vaat in Human Body ?

1) Prana Vayu

Site : Chief site of Prana Vayu is Head / Murdha and can be co-related to brain and mind and the organs related to brain and mind

Circulation Area : Chest, Heart, Lungs, Throat, Neck, Mouth, Nose

Function : Helps in in-take of food and makes its entry into stomach

2) Apana Vayu – Apana means “Air going downward”.

Site : Lower Abdomen, Pelvis, Anal Region, Lower portion of body, Large Intestine

Circulation Area : Colon, Scrotum & Testes, Urinary System, Penis, Navel Region, Groin, Anus & Rectum, Lower Intestine

Function : Semen Ejaculation, Normal Menstruation, proper & timely defecation, proper & timely urination, helps in delivery of child

Chakra : Muladhar Chakra

Element : Earth Element

3) Vyana Vayu

Site : Cheif site of Vyana Vayu can said as ‘Whole Body’ but it needs an operational center from where it is distributed all through the body. So, the chief operational center of Vyana Vayu is Heart (Ashtanga Hridaya).

Circulation Area : It conveys blood and oxygen to the different parts of body. It helps in transporting sweat & eliminating from body. It helps in carrying the semen. It helps in voiding the metabolic wastes including faeces, urine and sweat. It helps for transporting water to various parts of body. Overall, Vyana Vayu travels with great speed. Almost all the activities occuring in human body are under the control of Vyana Vayu.

Function : Mainly Cardiac Function. The functions of Vyana Vayu are thus to distribute the blood and nutrients to different parts of body through blood circulation, initiated in the heart. It also helps neuro-muscular conduction and co-ordination. Hence, it enables other normal bodily functions like walking, running, eye lid movement etc.. movement of body, muscles and other neuro-muscular conductivity. It helps in food tasting too.

4) Udana Vayu

Site : It is located in chest (heart and lung). Udana is the only nayu among other 4 subtypes which has an Urdhwa Gati (upward movement)

Circulation Area : Nose, Nostrils, Navel, Throat, Neck, Vocal Cords

Function : It is responsible for speech, memory etc functions. Production of speech, voice, phonation, singing, articulation. Physical strength, Endurance, Immunity are provided by Udana Vayu. Memory, mind activities, mental strength, stimulation of mind are under control of Udana Vayu. Color of the body of an individual is due to Udana Vayu.

NOTE : Samana Vayu and digestive fire (Jathara Agni) also participate in effective speech production. The process of speech production is not complete without the involvement of Soul, Mind and Intellect.

5) Samana Vayu

Site : It is located in the proximity of digestive fire (Jathara Agni). It helps in digestion and absorption of food in association with digestive fire.

Circulation Area : In general, digestion zone (apparatus) and the physiology of digestion are the areas of operation of Samana Vayu.

Function : Samana Vayu is just like giving air to digestive fire and aiding the combustion process in good quantity and quality.

Other Functions :

Samana Vayu is not only located in stomach but also like Vyana Vayu it has various functions at various parts of the body.
Samana Vayu helps in forming the waste substances of food (Mala) and it helps in holding and pushing ahead for excretion with the help of Apana Vayu.
Samana Vayu forms urine and pushes it ahead towards the urinary bladder for excretion.
Samana Vayu forms sweat and sends it to the periphery of skin for elimination.
Thus, Samana Vayu helps in detoxifying the body on a regular basis and keeps the body healthy.
Samana Vayu helps in holding the semen ready until it is ejaculated with the help of Apana Vayu (located at the lower part of body).
Samana Vayu keeps the menstrual blood ready and holds it until it is eliminated with the help of Apana Vayu (located at the lower part of body).

To sum up –

This shows that Samana Vayu has three platforms of functions. 1) Metabolic Function, 2) Distributive Function, 3) Excretory & Eliminatory Function
