Born on 09-October-1935 in a simple Christian weaver family of Tranol village near Ood (now district: Anand) in the Samaddha Charotar region of Gujarat, Late Shri Josephbhai Macquan is considered to be the best writer of Gujarati language and especially Dalit literature. Facing unbearable obstacles from birth due to poverty, backwardness and the “Manusmriti” attitudes of the so-called upper castes, he passed B. A. in first class in 1967; M. A. in second class in 1969 and B. Ed. in first class in 1971. During his career as a lecturer in the college, he was forced to leave his college job and go to a village school and had to endure many other hardships. He has given voice to such countless experiences of life and the atrocities he witnessed firsthand based on caste system in his writings and has provided a medium for the stories of the untouchable and backward caste community of the village in the original Charotri language. His novels “Vythana Vitak” (1985) and “Angliyat” (1988) received the first prize of the Gujarat Sahitya Akademi. Apart from this, many of his other writings have received various awards.
