- Keshav Batak wrote letter to the UK PM ” PM Keir Starmer should provide financial help to Leicester City Council to save libraries and community centres from closure ” : Keshav Batak NRI Keshav Batak has written a letter to PM Keir Starmer requesting him to provide financial help or take concrete steps to Leicester City Council amid the threat of closure of many libraries and community centres in Leicester City. Keshav Batak, convener of NRI Group London-UK, wrote in a letter sent to PM Keir Starmer that Leicester City Council is proposing to close or cut services at a number of libraries- Evington Library, Evington Ward, Knighton Library, Knighton Ward, Rushey Mead Library, Rushey Mead Ward, St Matthews Library, Wycliffe Ward and a number of community centres-Belgrave Neighbourhood Centre, Belgrave Ward, Braunstone Frith Recreation Centre, Western Ward, Coleman Neighbourhood Centre, Evington Ward, Eyres Monsell Community Centre-Eyres Monsell Ward, Gilmorton Rooms-Aylestone Ward, Netherhall Neighbourhood Centre-
Humberstone & Hamilton Ward, Rushey Mead Recreation Centre-Rushey Mead Ward, Tudor Centre-Abbey Ward for financial reasons. We have learned that Leicester City Council is considering closing or cutting services at the above libraries and community centres to save £2.1 million as the Government continues to make budget cuts. I can understand the economic challenges and priorities of the government and I can feel it too. This can be resolved through good financial management. By cutting down on expenses that have become an unnecessary burden on the government, Leicester City Council should be given enough budget funds so that the council does not have to close the above-mentioned libraries and community centres or cut down on services. There is no need to say how much the above libraries and community centres are needed and important for the teenagers, youth and elderly of Leicester. The Leicesterians need the above libraries and community centres very much. Especially the youth need the above mentioned libraries for gaining knowledge and women and elderly people need them for making good use of their time and the above mentioned community halls are very much needed for social activities. A consumer policy may also be introduced to keep the libraries and community halls operational. Leicester City Council has asked people to consult by 29 June on a proposal to close or cut services at the libraries and community halls. In the meantime the Government must look into this important issue and take appropriate steps to provide the necessary financial support to the Council.
